In short

Stencil concrete is a decorative finish: a paper stencil is laid on fresh concrete, colour hardener is worked into the surface, and the stencil is lifted to leave uncoloured lines that read as grout between pavers, bricks or tiles. Because it is one continuous slab, it cannot lift, sink or grow weeds between units the way separate pavers do. It is sealed after curing and re-sealed every few years.

Overview

What stencil concrete actually is

Stencil is applied while the concrete is still green. A paper pattern is laid over the surface, colour hardener is worked in, and the pattern is lifted to leave clean unpigmented grout lines behind.

You get paver, brick, tile, cobblestone and flagstone looks without joints that shift, settle or grow weeds. It is also the neatest way to blend two slabs into one surface or cover over previous repairs.

Questions

Stencil questions, answered

More in the concreting FAQ and guides.

Is stencil concrete better than pavers?

It gives the look of pavers in one continuous slab, so nothing can lift, sink or rock, and weeds have no joints to grow through. Pavers can be lifted and relaid individually; stencil cannot.

Is stencil concrete slippery?

The surface is flat between grout lines, so grip comes from the sealer. Ask for a non-slip additive for wet areas.

How often does stencil concrete need re-sealing?

Every two to five years, sooner in full sun or under heavy traffic.
