In short

Exposed aggregate concrete is made by removing the top layer of cement paste after the pour to reveal the decorative stone within, then sealing it. The stone texture gives genuine grip and no repeating pattern, which suits sloped driveways, pool surrounds and steps. Sunshine Coast Concrete Services pours exposed aggregate across the Sunshine Coast, QLD.

Overview

What exposed aggregate concrete actually is

Exposed aggregate is made by removing the top layer of cement paste after the pour to reveal the decorative stone within, then sealing the surface. Because the texture comes from real stone rather than a printed or pressed pattern, it has genuine depth and no repeating motif.

That stone texture also gives it real grip, which makes it one of the better choices for sloped driveways, pool surrounds, steps and paths. Stone selection sets the colour: pale quartz and limestone for light finishes, black and gold aggregate where you want contrast.

What an exposed aggregate finish gives you

01

Real stone texture

Depth and variation that no pattern or stamp can reproduce.

02

Strong slip resistance

The reason it suits slopes, steps and wet areas.

03

Very hard wearing

No pattern to wear off — the surface is the aggregate itself.

04

Colour by stone choice

Light quartz through to black and gold, chosen before the pour.

Questions

Exposed aggregate questions, answered

More in the concreting FAQ and guides.

Is exposed aggregate slippery?

It is one of the grippier finishes because the exposed stone gives real texture. A high-gloss sealer can reduce grip, so for pools, steps and slopes we use a sealer with a non-slip additive.

Does exposed aggregate need sealing?

Yes. Sealing locks in the stone and brings out its colour, and it needs renewing every two to five years.

Is exposed aggregate good for a sloping driveway?

Yes — the stone texture gives genuine grip with no repeating pattern, which suits sloped driveways, pool surrounds and steps.
